Abstract The role of somatostatin and octreotide in the treatment of acute pancreatitis has been studied in the last two decades. We describe the physiologic activities of somatostatin and octreotide and their action on pancreas secretion. Results of experimental studies on the action of somatostatin and octreotide in some models of acute pancreatitis are discussed as well as the results of clinical studies on the effects of the two drugs in human acute pancreatitis. On the basis of these data, ...

Chronic pancreatitis is an inflammatory disease well known for its epidemiological and clinical aspects, but still obscure as to its aetiology and pathogenesis [1]. Alcohol has been identified to be the cause of the disease, since the largest number of patients suffering from chronic pancreatitis were found to have consumed large quantities of wine or spirits over a long period of time [2, 3, 4]. The French school furnished the mechanism by which alcohol caused injury to the pancreas, namely, th...

Background: Pancreatitis is defined as an inflammatory disease of the pancreas, leading to morphological and pathological changes. Recently, an autoimmune pathogenesis of this disease has been proposed. This type of pancreatitis should be differentiated from other pancreatic diseases, since appropriate therapy is effective and morphological changes and pancreatic function can recover to normal levels. Aim of the Study: To assess the possibility of distinguishing autoimmune pancreatitis from othe...

The differential diagnosis between acute and chronic alcohol-associated pancreatitis is often difficult or impossible at onset of the disease. A study was conducted to determine possible relationships between patients suffering from a first episode of acute alcoholic pancreatitis and patients with unequivocal chronic alcoholic pancreatitis, comparing age, drinking and smoking habits, and body mass index (BMI). Two groups of men were considered. The first group consisted of 67 patients with a dia...
