Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has many benefits, in the form of reduced postoperative morbidity, improved recovery and reduced inpatient stay. It is imperative, however, when new techniques are adopted, in the context of treating oncology patients, that the oncological efficacy and safety are established rigorously rather than assumed based on first principles. Here we have attempted to provide a comprehensive review of all the contentious and topical themes surrounding the use of MIS in the ...

Introduction/Background The European Society of Gynaecological Oncology(ESGO) and The British Gynaecological Cancer Society(BGCS) recommend laparoscopic surgery for treatment of endometrial cancer. Conversion rates to open can be high when performing surgical staging, particularly in patients with high BMI. It is a retrospective study of 90 subfertile women with the main outcome measure of live-birth rate following spontaneous and assisted conception. Mean age of the study population was 37 ± 5 years and mean uterine size was 21 ± 6 weeks. During follow-up (mean 50 ± 10 months), 28 (31%) pregnancies occurred; 18 spontaneous and 10 following IVF. The l...

Early cord clamping was initially introduced as part of the package of care known as "active management of the third stage", which was implemented to reduce postpartum hemorrhage. It has now been shown to provide no benefit to the mother and to result in harm to the neonate. The clinical trial evidence relating to delayed cord clamping compared to immediate cord clamping is presented and the physiological rationale for delayed cord clamp- ing is discussed in this paper. Most organizations (eg Wo...
