The output from an earth pressure cell (EPC) is usually related to the normal stress in soil through fluid calibration, where a known pressure is applied to the EPC and the output is recorded. However, distribution of normal stress within a soil is not uniform, and the EPC is not an ideal membrane—bending stiffness affects the response. These factors complicate the performance of the EPC. A calibration procedure for an EPC is reviewed, and it is shown that these controversial sensors can provide...

The stress field in a pile-supported 3.9-m-high embankment was interpreted through three-dimensional finite-element modeling, and evaluated by field measurements involving strain gauges on the piles and earth pressure cells at the top and bottom of a 0.9-m-thick geogrid-reinforced platform. Analyses of the numerical results and the experimental data suggest that a vaultlike arch developed within the embankment, such that the vertical stress at the top of the platform was concentrated above the p...

A pile-supported embankment constructed on TH 241 near St. Michael, Minnesota was instrumented with 48 sensors, including strain gages on the piles and on the geogrid, as well as earth pressure cells and settlement systems near the base of the embankment. Pile-supported embankments are relatively novel structures employed largely at bridge approaches and highway expansions where soft soils would otherwise lead to unacceptably large differential settlements. The structure typically consists of a ...
