Abstract Over recent years, eutectic high-entropy alloys (EHEAs) have intrigued substantial research enthusiasms due to their good castability as well as balanced strength–ductility synergy. In this study, a bulk cast Al19.25Co18.86Fe18.36Ni43.53 EHEA is developed with fine in-situ lamellar eutectics. The eutectics comprise alternating ordered face-centered-cubic (L12) and ordered body-centered-cubic (B2) phases with semi-coherent interfaces. The resulting microstructure resembles that of most r...

Abstract There is currently a gap in our understanding of mechanisms that contribute to high strength and high plasticity in high strength UFG ferritic steel with nano-size Fe3C carbides in situations that involve combination of various strain rates and high temperature. In this regard, we describe the mechanistic basis of obtaining high strength-high plasticity combination in an ultrafine-grained (UFG) (∼500 ± 30 nm) ferritic steel with nano-size carbides, which sustained large plastic deformat...

Abstract Plastic instability manifested as the serrated flow on stress-strain curves of metal alloys is generally detrimental to their processing and manufacturing. The flow serration in the HfNbTaTiZr alloy is reported in the present work and its dependence on temperatures (573-823K) and strain rates (5 × 10−5 s−1-1 × 10−3 s−1) is investigated with experiments. The notable transition of the onset strain of the serrated flow from a declining (normal behavior) to rising (inverse behavior) trend w...

Abstract The development of sound cost-effective alloys is always the pursuit of engineering application materials. A non-equiatomic FeMnCrNiAl high-entropy alloy (HEA) has been processed by cold rolling and annealing to prepare samples with a fully-recrystallized structure, and composite structures of recovered and recrystallized structures. The composite structure with a dual heterogeneous structure of both the matrix and precipitates can be designed to provide a synergistic combination of str...

Abstract High total strain-controlled creep-fatigue tests of 1.8% were performed for a directionally-solidified Ni-based superalloy, DZ445, at 900 °C in air. Dwell times of 0, 2, and 5 min. were introduced at the tensile peak strain for each cycle. Experimental results show a decrease in fatigue life with increasing dwell time. The significant cyclic softening is observed after the application of the dwell time. The mean compressive stress and large plastic-strain accumulation are produced due t...

The present work investigated the formation and mechanical behavior of body-centered-cubic (BCC) Zr(Hf)-Nb-Ti medium entropy alloys (MEAs), in which three series of alloys, [Zr-Zr14](Zr,Nb)3, [Ti-Zr14](Ti,Nb)3, and [Ti-(Hf,Zr)14](Nb)3, were designed by the cluster formula approach. With increasing the Nb content, the BCC-β structural stability of the [Zr-Zr14](Zr,Nb)3 alloys would be enhanced, as evidenced by the BCC [Zr-Zr14](Nb)3 (Zr83.33Nb16.67 in atomic percent at. pct) alloy containing a mi...

Abstract Bimetallic additively manufactured structures (BAMSs) can replace traditionally-fabricated functionally-graded-components through fusion welding processes and can eliminate locally-deteriorated mechanical properties arising from post-processing. The present work fabricates a BAMS by sequentially depositing the austenitic stainless-steel and Inconel625 using a gas-metal-arc-welding (GMAW)-based wire + arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) system. Elemental mapping shows a smooth compositiona...

Abstract A non-equiatomic Co29Cr29Fe29Ni12.5W0.5 high-entropy alloy (HEA) strengthened by two-step rolling was fabricated, and its microstructure evolution and tensile behavior at cryogenic temperatures were investigated. When the temperature decreases from 293 K to 173 K, the yield strength increases from 640 MPa to 1017 MPa. At 77 K, an outstanding strength-ductility synergy can be observed, with a yield strength of 1.33 GPa and an excellent ductility of 46%. Prior to tensile testing, the anne...

A controlled wrinkled structure is a simple and effective approach to achieve unique properties and has been widely used in flexible materials. In this study, we reported a substrate prestrain method for fabricating wrinkle-structured Zr52Ti34Nb14 multiple-basis-element (MBE) alloy films as biocompatible materials. Variations in the film thickness and substrate prestraining enabled a precise control of the amplitude and wavelength of the wrinkled structures, ranging from micrometers to nanometer...

Single-phase hexagonal close-packed structure of the ScYLaGdTbDyHoErLu high-entropy alloy was studied in detail. The applicability of the rule of mixture was analyzed with respect to the lattice constant, mechanical parameters, elastic properties, melting point, and hardness of the alloy. Significant tension-compression asymmetry has been found and explained by the strength differential effect during the uniaxial tests. Numerous deformation twins and high densities of stacking faults can be obse...
