Background: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are the most frequent cause of infection related to healthcare. There are different strategies for preventing them and new ones, such as BIP Foley catheters (catheters coated in silver, gold, and palladium), should be considered as an alternative in reducing said infections. Aims: To compare the incidence of CAUTIs in patients with BIP Foley catheters versus conventional Foley catheters. Materials and methods: A double-blind clini...

The electrocardiographic U wave was describe by Einthoven in 1903. Despite the time elapsed since its description the electrophysiological basis underlying the genesis of the U wave has not been precisely elucidated and several hypothesis have been proposed. Proper evaluation and interpretation of the U wave is useful to the clinician because it is a marker of heart disease. The aim of this paper is to review current concepts related to U wave, its genesis, significance and proper interpretation...
We report a case of rhombencephalitis infection by Listeria monocytogenes in a 66-year-old man with cirrhosis. The CSF analysis indicated L. monocytogenes as the most likely pathogen. Blood and CSF culture were positive to L. monocytogenes and MRI findings were suggestive of rhomboencephalitis. The treatment was started empirically and then modified when the culture results were available. The patient had a full clinical recovery without neurologic sequelae. Clinicians should remember that L. mo...

ABSTRACT ABSTRACT ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Platelets have a role in coagulation, thrombosis, immunity, inflam- mation and angiogenesis. It has been shown that platelet size, when measured as mean platelet volume (MPV), is a marker of platelet function and is associated with platelet activity. Evidence derived from several studies and meta-analysis suggests a correla- tion between MPV increased and the risk of thrombosis and inflam- mation. Elevated MPV is potentially a useful prognostic biomarker in pa...
